The holy grail of SEO is link building. Links from well respected sites to your website are seen as a vote of confidence by the search engines.

  1. Trust: The better the link, (i.e. the better the reputation of the website) the higher Google ranks you as a result. It’s not about ‘the most’ links but about ‘the best’ links. So its more valuable getting a link from an indexed page from Yellow Pages, than a link from a obscure directory, because Yellow Pages enjoys a high ranking already.

  2. The relevance of the site that links to you. If you sell flowers online, and get a link from your friend's site who runs a golf shop, Google will not see that as a very relevant link.

  3. The anchor text used in linking to your website. It is important for Google to find your link embedded behind words that are relevant to your website. In ‘click here to buy your flowers online’ the embedded text should be behind ‘buy your flowers online’ and not behind ‘click here'. (Unless of course you want to come up in searches for the words 'click here')

Inbound link building takes time and should not be done too quickly as Search Engines ignore or even penalise you for gaining too many links in a short space of time. Best to give this 3 to 6 months for your links to start helping you with your ranking.

Of course, links need to be maintained and new links need to be created. Its on ongoing affair.
